The box beneath the till

The bell over Dora's door rings, and you almost answer her usual question about letting the weather in. Iris stops with the key still raised. She almost answered it too. You begin packing before either of you has to speak. The buyer wants bare shelves by Monday. Your employer wants an answer about a promotion on the same day. You put both deadlines face down beside the tape. Under the till, Iris finds a ribbon-bound box of letters. Dora kept them for people who couldn't bring themselves to deliver them. Most owners came back. Some envelopes have waited forty years. At the bottom is one addressed to Iris. Your handwriting. Your twenty-one-year-old certainty that writing something was almost the same as saying it. She places it on the counter without opening it. We don't have to start with that one. The town archive can contact the other owners. Or you could take coffee to Dora's roof terrace and ask Iris about the life you have missed. She waits for you to choose.
