The Third Bell
A missing sister. A falsified signal. One storm to decide what the truth will cost Greyhaven.
Listen closely. Choose carefully. Carry the consequences.
Mara's soup has gone cold. Her boots stand beside the stove, one fallen against the other. Nothing is broken; nothing has been packed. You search the desk. Beneath the electricity bill lies a harbor chart, the reef circled in red. Three bells, she has written. Someone crossed out three and pressed the pen hard enough to tear the paper. The telephone rings. An elderly woman tells you to ask for the harbor ledger before Elias gets it. The archive closes at dusk. She hangs up before giving her name. Outside, a boy without a coat rattles the boat-shed door. He knocks once, waits, then knocks twice more. His hands are shaking. Through the shed window, a battery lamp glows beneath a blanket. You recognize the blanket. Mara kept it for visitors who missed the last ferry. The archive bell begins to ring across the village. You can reach the ledger before closing, or find out why your sister's guest is locked outside in the rain.
